The Davidic Covenant

Memory Scripture:

I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn to my servant David: Your seed I will establish forever. And build up your throne to all generations (Psalm 89:3,4).

God promises David's throne forever, a lasting covenant for all generations, a legacy of faith and promise.

BRIEF COMMENT

In this Psalm, the psalmist reflects on God's absolute control over everything and reminds us that nothing happens outside His will. It also celebrates God's promise to David, telling him that his descendants would always sit on the throne. While this promise began with David's line, it ultimately finds its fullest meaning in Christ's reign, who comes from David's family. David, a humble shepherd, was a man after God's own heart. He led Israel with honesty and integrity, showing God's faithfulness to His covenant.

This promise to David reminds us that the Bible isn't just a collection of stories-it is God's message to us. It shows us God's unchanging nature, His faithfulness and the promises He keeps across generations. When we reflect on this, we are encouraged to trust in God's promises, follow His guidance and remember that He is a covenant-keeping God Who has a good plan for our lives, just as He did for David.

BACKGROUND SCRIPTURE: 1 Chronicles 17:11-14

AIM AND OBJECTIVES

AIM: To clarify God's covenant with David, showing Him as the God of covenants and Keeper of promises.

OBJECTIVE: By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

i. explain what the Davidic covenant is;

ii. identify God as a covenant-keeping and faithful God; and

iii. identify ways to enter into lasting covenant relationship with God.

INTRODUCTION

TEXTUAL SOURCES: 2 SAMUEL 7:5-12; PSALMS 89:3-4, 34-37; 132:11-12; АCTS 2:22FF

To God be the glory for the lessons He has taught us in recent weeks. Last week, we explored: The Kingdom of Israel, where we learnt about the reigns of Israel's kings and the establishment of the kingdom.

This week, we focus on: The Davidic Covenant, which reveals God's faithfulness to His promises across generations. We will discover how God promised David that his kingdom would endure through his descendants, ensuring its stability and continuity. This everlasting covenant demonstrates God's unwavering faithfulness and commitment to fulfilling His promises for those who remain faithful to Him.

As today is Father's Day 2026, we are reminded of how God, our Heavenly Father, has always been faithful in caring for us. Let us learn to build a strong relationship with Him, one that will leave a lasting legacy for future generations. May we be blessed in Jesus' name. Amen.

LESSON EXPOSITION

I. GOD'S ETERNAL COVENANT WITH DAVID (2 Sam. 7:5-12; Ps. 89:3,4)

When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom (2 Sam. 7:12).

a) God, in His greatness, is both a covenant Maker and Keeper. Despite His immortality, He freely enters into binding agreements with man, who are mortal and imperfect.

b) In Hebrew, beriyth refers to an agreement between two parties, where each commits to keeping promises made.

c) The idea of a covenant with God is central in the Bible and reflects His unique nature. We should aim to mirror this attribute of God in our own lives.

d) 2 Sam. 7:5-17: God made an unconditional covenant with David, separate from His covenants with Noah, Abraham and Israel.

e) Ps. 89:3-4: God promised to establish David's descendants and build his throne forever (1 Chro. 22:9-10; 28:5-6). What a faithful God we serve!

f) To truly experience God's covenant, we must prioritise intimacy with Him, building a lasting relationship so His promises can be fully fulfilled in our lives. Our sincere service to God will leave a legacy that speaks long after we are gone.

II. GOD'S FAITHFULNESS TO DAVIDIC COVENANT (Ps. 89:34-37; 132:11-12; Acts 2:22ff)

Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh. He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne (Act 2:30).

a) Ps. 89:34: God, the covenant Maker and Keeper, is always true to His promises (Acts 2:29-37). This makes the Bible reliable and enduring.

b) lines 34-37: God watches over His covenants to ensure they are perfectly fulfilled. His promises remain valid as long as we stay true to our part, though humans may falter (132:11,12).

c) 132:11-12: He honoured His covenant with David by establishing his dynasty as Israel's rightful rulers for all generations.

d) line 11: The promise to sustain David's dynasty ultimately points to the future fulfilment of the Messiah's reign, fulfilled in Christ Jesus, the King of kings (Rev. 22:5).

e) Acts 2:22ff: Peter explains how Jesus' resurrection fulfilled David's prophecy that the Messiah's body would not decay, showing the connection between David and Jesus (Ps. 16:10).

f) The Davidic covenant reveals David's special role in biblical history and the continuity between the Old and New Testaments, leading to Jesus, the promised descendant of David (Lk. 1:32).

LIFE APPLICATION

God has a unique plan for each of us, just just as He had for David. Like David, we are called to walk in God's purpose and this begins with trusting Him and following His commands. We may not always fully understand His plan, but we can be confident that His way is far better than anything we could imagine. Let us focus on living a life that honours God and builds a legacy that shows His love and faithfulness. Just as a caring father looks after his children, God is always there for us, guiding us with His loving care. Let's live in a way that follows His will, trusting Him to lead us into the future He has prepared for us.

CONCLUSION

This concludes Lesson 22. We are encouraged to embrace God's covenant, and as parents, pastors and mentors, we must strive to build godly legacies that will endure, much like the Davidic covenant. Parents should pray for their children's futures, seeking God's guidance and blessings for them.

Ọlọ́run ni eto ara-ọ̀tọ̀ fun olukuluku wa, gẹgẹ bi O ti ni in fun eyi si bẹ̀rẹ̀ pẹlu gbígbẹkẹle E ati titẹle awọn àṣẹ Rẹ.
